Our Mission

  • Salvia spathacea (Hummingbird sage)To grow quality plants using sustainable production methods;
  • To promote regionally appropriate, sustainable landscaping practices
  • And to have a hell of a lot of fun while doing it!

Our Plants

Iris douglasiana (Douglas iris) - dark purpleGold Rush specializes in plants that are water-wise and/or provide a food source for birds, butterflies and beneficial insects.  We take great care to ensure that none of our plants are invasive.

We grow a wide range of perennials, succulents, ornamental grasses and shrubs including a large number of California natives.

Our plants are carefully selected for their ability to grow well in the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas of California.

Gold Rush: How we got our name

Gold Rush digging dogThe nursery was named for our nursery dog, Java; Gold Rush being the line of golden retrievers she's from.  The more appropriate name, Digging Dog, had already been taken by another nursery in Mendocino!

Gold Rush is also a fitting name for our nursery because many of our plants originate from California, Australia and South Africa, all of which are, or were, gold-producing regions.

Pest and Disease Control at Gold Rush

One of our main goals is to be careful stewards of the environment.  We also want the nursery and our plants to be safe for our workers and customers.  Therefore, we use no synthetic pesticides or herbicides on our plants or in the nursery and the absolute bare minimum of organic pesticides.  Currently, we're using only Sluggo for slugs and snails and BT for caterpillars of the light brown apple moth.  All weeds are lovingly pulled by hand!
